Comana - Tour the Hidden Delta

This 1 day tour is designed for the nature crazed traveler, who wants to see something truly special.

Yes, we know that the Danube Delta is hours away and requires an extra day for any of your tours. This is why we offer you something different, but still with the same amount of untouched wilderness.

Your day will start at your hotel, where our guide will pick you up. Drive south, on the way to Giurgiu and the Bulgarian border. but at Calugareni, the sights of the historic defeat of the Ottomans by King Michael the Brave, make your way east. You will leave the main road and enter an area seemingly forgotten by time. The villages here show Wallachia as it once was. And only after 10 km, arrive at the magical place called Comana Natural Park.

Comana Natural Park, 35 km away from Bucharest, is the place where the small river Neajlov, together with two tributaries, make an amazing inland delta, as far as the eye can see. It is unique in Europe, and includes dozens of species of plants and animals protected by the international laws, being considered the second Delta of Romania, after the Danube Delta. The natural park covers 25,000 hectares, being the largest protected area in the Romanian Plain (Campia Romana).

Stop at one of the local b&b and start your adventure on foot. Walk along the protected wetlands and into the century old forests, while constantly keeping an eye out for rare birds and animals. You will be accompanied by swans, egrets, cormorants, mallards and magpies. But the eventual stork, or even a lost pelican may appear. These over 141 species of birds feed on over 13 species of fish and many other small mammals and reptiles. All along the way there are look out posts for wildlife.

At the Celtic village you will arrive in the heart of the delta, right among the swampland, after walking on a rustic wooden bridge.

Return to your car and possibly have a typical fishermen’s lunch at one of the great b&b.

Upon request, we can organize a great wine tasting in the local cellars of the old mansions. Going down will make you feel like stepping back in the time of the legendary Count. The Cellar is situated in the middle of what is now the adventure park, one of the most beautiful natural parks the south part of Romania has to offer.

Afternoon arrival back to Bucharest. Drop off at your hotel.

*Comana village is a place also covered in mystery, as one of the many legends about Vlad the Impaler say that Vlad was actually killed and beheaded, by his own brother, in the ancient monastery of Comana. Perhaps this is also why one the neighboring villages is called Vlad Tepes.
